Known to his friends as “Al Boogz”, Al started his musical journey at the age of 7 getting his talent from his dad, a singer who introduced Al to the organ. Soon afterward Al discovered the drums. It wasn’t long however, before he wanted to play the guitar following influences like Tito Jackson and the Osmond Brothers.
That was the beginning of it all.
He had taken a liking to rock, r&b, jazz & gospel music. By the age of 15, Al was playing in 3 different bands plus the High School Band (from which he earned a spot in the Who’s Who in Music and 1st Honors in music). He did all this while attending school full time and keeping a part time job. Nothing could sway him from his musical dreams. His influences at this point were artists such as Jimi Hendrix, The Isley Brothers, Prince and The Revolution and Louis Johnson of the Brothers Johnson. His interest in the bass really stems from the group SLAVE.
He’s formed several local groups playing Socca, Calypso and Reggae. His musical activities prior to forming The United Soul Band include playing with various Gospel groups and churches as well as doing tours and recordings. Mostly however he’s been writing original music – producing and performing on his own.
In his own words…. “Basically, I like to keep good grooves that make people want to dance whether they want to or not… they just end up movin’ & groovin’ before I am through. Of course, keep it in the pocket to groove with my fellow group members so THEY get to shine most of all. But spiritually speaking I thank GOD for the Gift and I try to make it as excellent as I can because HE is of Utmost Excellence and I have to give to Him and all of His Creation the Best possible return from that gift!”
